What is the colon?

Colon

The colon, large intestine, is the end portion of the digestive tract. It is approximately 5 feet long and 2 ½ inches in diameter. Its main function is elimination of waste and conserving water. Beneficial bacteria that aid in the synthesis of vitamins and nutrients inhabit the colon.

What is the history of colon lavage?

In 1500 BC, the Ebers Papyrus recorded colon lavage as a therapy to infuse aqueous substances into the large intestine. In the 4th and 5th century, Hippocrates used enemas to bring down fever.

In early America, enemas were a common treatment to maintain health and ward off disease. For example, during the Lewis and Clarke expedition, a physician advocated the use enemas to treat fever and illness.

In the early 1900's in Battle Creek, Michigan, John H. Kellogg, M.D. extensively used colon therapy on forty thousand patients. Kellogg stated, “90% of the diseases of civilization are due to improper function of the colon."

Throughout history, colon hydrotherapy has experienced varying degrees of popularity due to misconceptions as well as preconceived notions and emotionalism. A resurging interest in cleaning the colon is attributed to physicians James A. Wiltsie, M.D. and Joseph E. G. Wadington M.D. who placed great value on the therapeutic benefits of colon hydrotherapy. Dr. Wadington stated “Abnormal functioning of the intestinal canal is the precursor of much ill-health, especially of chronic disease conditions. Restoration of physiologic intestinal elimination is often the first, but too often ignored, important preliminary to eventual restoration of the health in general.” Dr. Wiltsie states that “Our knowledge of the colon, and of it pathology and management, has not kept pace with that of many organs and systems of the body. As long as we continue to assume that the colon will take care of itself, just that long will we remain in complete ignorance of perhaps the most important source of ill health in the whole body.”

In recent years, colon hydrotherapy has become extremely popular due to the growth of holistic practitioners and alternative health therapies.
